Sherlock lying on the pavement pretending to be dead could have closed his eyes (way easier to not blink etc) but no that boy had his eyes wide open just to look at John
I often wonder if Sherlock was shocked at how shaken and upset John was. I wonder if it made him question if he’d made the right choice, if it harder for him to leave or to stay away as long as he did. I sometime wonder if, on some level, he hoped that John would see through the ruse, would look into his eyes and realise he was still alive, and they would somehow make it all right, make it so he didn’t have to leave London at all.
One of the things that was weird about TEH to me was that Sherlock seemed to not realise how effected John was by his death, and yet in TRF he saw John’s reaction to his fall. He was looking right at him when John broke and crumpled with shock. He watched John break down and cry at his grave, and beg him to not be dead. He heard him. He saw John’s grief clear as day.
TEH really made no sense. At all. I think I’ll always hate the episode. Let me tell you though, some damn fine fics came out of this hiatus. The fandom got it so right that there was no way TEH wasn’t going to be a disappointment I think.
True. Fandom is amazing. I wonder if people would still read post-TRF explorations… There’s so much fuel for fic there. The angst of separation, the complexity of emotion wrapped up in the return, the ability to explore their relationship in light of it all.
S3 was the starting of my disappointment with BBC Sherlock, and I had to work very hard to accept it.
After S4 I must admit I hated S3 and S4 so I have no problem skipping this BBC “canon” and reading post TRF again will be awesome. In fact I read lots of Victorian Holmes fanfic and the return is always one of my favourite parts.
@themadampersand, it seems there are many people who feel that way. Perhaps I should explore it more. There are so many beautiful ways to handle the return.
