i’ve defended SAFES in the past because t IS one of the few or only women’s shelters where you can get a bed same night and they accept trans women but never again. I had callers tell me they would rather go back to jail than spend the night in SAFES.
When I was still religious and churchy, I assisted with food donation drives for one of the local Salvo shelters and their yearly toy drives at Christmas. I don’t know if they still do it, but at the time, they had people who would actually pick out any food donations deemed “too indulgent” and any toys that were considered too high-dollar for the request that had been made would be replaced with something more generic. Like because people had been poor enough to need donations, they didn’t deserve spices to go in their food, or a real Barbie instead of a dollar-store doll.
My dad still insists on bellringing for them every year, but we both quit working the drives because of that and went to doing other local charity stuff that *didn’t* treat the needy like undeserving shit. One thing they do still do is boot everyone back out on the street at dawn, no matter what the weather or the condition of the person. There’s a highway overpass outside the gates for people to hide from rain and snow or sun, but nothing protects from the winds or cold or heat, and there are ambulances picking people up off the street because they’ve collapsed from something or another almost daily. It’s a nightmare.
Re-reblogging for this commentary. 😦
