My two biggest Black Panther takeaways as a white person
1. M’Baku shutting Ross down and telling him he doesn’t get to speak.
2. Shuri calling Ross “colonizer.”
I know Agent Ross is not the focus of the film, but he is the teachable moment for white folks. We can thrill at the action and the tech and it is absolutely easy to identify with all of the amazing main characters. But we are supposed to learn some stuff too… and Ross is us. He is our reminder that Wakanda is not the world we have made and we don’t lead the conversation here.
