I think the Roundup thing REALLY infuriates me because I live in farm country. And I’ve seen so, so many farmers around here die of cancer young.

Shit. I’ve lost family young to, specifically, non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. I’ve watched them plant roundup-ready corn and soybeans and spray roundup by the thousands of gallons, and then die in misery and drown in medical debt. And we’ve always suspected it was the chemicals that did it, but of course Monsanto always claimed that of course it wasn’t, that it was PERFECTLY SAFE.

And now there it is, in court documents, that they lied. They knew the whole time and they lied.

Abstract

Background

Glyphosate is the most commonly used herbicide worldwide, with both residential and agricultural uses. In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans,” noting strong mechanistic evidence and positive associations for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in some epidemiologic studies. A previous evaluation in the Agricultural Health Study (AHS) with follow-up through 2001 found no statistically significant associations with glyphosate use and cancer at any site.

Methods

The AHS is a prospective cohort of licensed pesticide applicators from North Carolina and Iowa. Here, we updated the previous evaluation of glyphosate with cancer incidence from registry linkages through 2012 (North Carolina)/2013 (Iowa). Lifetime days and intensity-weighted lifetime days of glyphosate use were based on self-reported information from enrollment (1993–1997) and follow-up questionnaires (1999–2005). We estimated incidence rate ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using Poisson regression, controlling for potential confounders, including use of other pesticides. All statistical tests were two-sided.

Results

Among 54 251 applicators, 44 932 (82.8%) used glyphosate, including 5779 incident cancer cases (79.3% of all cases). In unlagged analyses, glyphosate was not statistically significantly associated with cancer at any site. However, among applicators in the highest exposure quartile, there was an increased risk of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) compared with never users (RR = 2.44, 95% CI = 0.94 to 6.32, Ptrend = .11), though this association was not statistically significant. Results for AML were similar with a five-year (RRQuartile 4 = 2.32, 95% CI = 0.98 to 5.51, Ptrend = .07) and 20-year exposure lag (RRTertile 3 = 2.04, 95% CI = 1.05 to 3.97, Ptrend = .04).

Conclusions

In this large, prospective cohort study, no association was apparent between glyphosate and any solid tumors or lymphoid malignancies overall, including NHL and its subtypes. There was some evidence of increased risk of AML among the highest exposed group that requires confirmation.

You know, a huge part of this case was the fact that Monsanto and the EPA colluded to ‘fix’ studies on Roundup and hide any research contradicting the company claim that it was harmless. They routinely paid off scientists and editors of scientific journals to ensure that any research contradicting the company line was killed, and churned out study after study claiming that it was safe. There are internal Monsanto memos that confirm this.

If you want a look at the primary court documents they are public record and available right here.

Eurus = emotion

Eurus is Sherlock’s emotional side. She is sentiment itself.

Mycroft is the one responsible for imprisoning her. At a textual level this makes no sense. But if Eurus is emotion then it makes perfect sense. Sherlock started to imitate Mycroft’s own attitude to emotion, locking his emotional side in a fortress and then forgetting all about it.

Eurus has superpowers. She can make people do things just by talking with them. Again this makes no sense at the textual level. What makes us do things we don’t want to do on a rational level? Emotion. Emotions are motivators. People do things because of sentiment all the time.

Although locked in a fortress she escapes with ease. Yet she returns too. This makes no sense textually. But as subtext, she is Sherlock’s emotions locked inside him and yet his emotions escape regularly leaking all over the place.

John has an affair with Eurus. There is a romance between John and Sherlock’s emotional side.

Eurus is John’s therapist. Sherlock’s emotional side heals John.

Eurus plays the violin too. In fact, she taught him. At a textual level it makes no sense but subtextually, emotion is necessary to music.

Eurus plays the role of the daughter to the killer.Does Sherlock himself fear that he will kill one day because his emotions are that powerful? Or is she only playing that role as it is a conversation Sherlock is having with himself about the case?

Moriarty visits Eurus. Moriarty has always understood Sherlock’s emotional side. He sees beneath the mask that Sherlock wears.

Eurus is suicidal but Sherlock talks her out of it. Sherlock’s emotional side is suicidal but his rational side stops himself.

Eurus puts Sherlock through tortuous mind games. Doesn’t emotion do the exact same thing?

Sherringford is the original name for Sherlock. He started whole, rationality and emotions both.

Eurus killed Redbeard/Victor and then Eurus was taken away by Mycroft. That’s the textual level. But what does it mean? Was Sherlock accidentally responsible for someone’s death while caught up with his emotions? Or perhaps he simply blames himself? Or is the death symbolic? Did he fall in love with Victor as a child and revealing his true feelings destroyed the friendship?

The final problem then is reason vs sentiment. How do we live with emotions? Should we lock them up as Mycroft recommends? Sherlock has tried this and it didn’t work. So what’s Sherlock’s solution in the end? He lives with her. He accepts her. He becomes whole again. Reason and sentiment.

Tagging @sherlock-overflow-error and @sarahthecoat for cataloguing purposes.

YES! I had a similar feeling, and it was the violin connection that twigged for me. I had always, since reading ACD as a teenager, understood that holmes’ violin playing was his emotional outlet. So if “euros” claimed to have taught him to play, then that meant she represented that emotional aspect of him, that needed music as an expression. And as you say, nothing about her makes sense on the surface, but it all falls into place as subtext/symbolic.

To all the young Millenials about to watch M*A*S*H for the first time, do not be turned off by Max Klinger being a guy in a dress.

For those of you unaware, the character tries several schemes to get out of the army on the grounds of being mentally unfit for service, most notably being a man who wears a dress, which no one buys. It’s played off as a joke but everyone loves him and treats him very respectfully unless it’s a character you’re not supposed to sympathise with.

You might want to call bull on the fact that they’re getting a cheap joke at a man in a dress. But, this man in a dress had a gender identity crisis ON SCREEN (although they couldn’t call it that) and also helped pave the way to allow transgender people into the armed forces.

No, seriously. A congressman who was a fan of the show brought up how Max Klinger cross dressing never was an issue at this M*A*S*H unit and it allowed transgender people to serve in the armed forces!

I’m a trans(masc) millenial and the biggest thing I feel was made fun of was how much some people were bothered by Klinger’s clothes, not the fact that he’s wearing them.

Klinger learns a lot about fashion and sewing and seems to develop a genuine passion for it over time.

There’s even one time when he develops a psychosomantic (spelling?) rash during a short time when he has to wear his uniform. Even after it is clear that he’s not gonna get to go home by wearing dresses, he continues – suggesting either a persistent act of defiance to make him feel better, or a real appreciation of the clothes… or both!

He’s clearly coded as straight, is accepted by his peers, and his character arc and development is barely focused on his clothes (rather it focuses on what he wants to do with his life; his dream future).

For a show made in the 70’s depicting the 50’s, M*A*S*H was a show before its time – with feminist messages and anti-war messages, as well as speking out against homophobia and racism – and Klinger was a groundbreaking character.

This is especially true, I think, if you watch the episodes sans the laugh track. Without the canned laughter, Klinger’s costuming comes off as especially sincere.

Klinger is a good man and a great character and everyone in the camp respects him (and if they don’t, it’s not because of his attire).

The discovery that you can select “English Without Laugh Track” as an audio track has made the DVDs wonderful.

YOU CAN TURN OFF THE LAFF TRACK?? YES PLEASE!!

Klinger is the best!

When I was a little girl I legit loved Klinger and his gorgeous dresses and skirts, and nothing about him seemed strange or abnormal to me; I understood that he’d wanted a section 8 initially but it also seemed really clear to me that in that process he’d found himself, in whatever sense was important to him, and everyone accepted him in the unit. To me growing up in a completely queerphobic household/culture, he was a figure of great love and joy and positivity, and I embraced him unquestioningly and gratefully.
