Photographer Mattias Klum from National Geographic gets close and personal with a lion.
“and all of a sudden you feel very small” damn right
IT JUST WANTS TO BE LOVED AND SAVED
please, if you are able, do what you can for the asiatic lion. donate, get involved, spread information. there are only about 300 left in the world, and they all live in Gir Forest National Park in India.
the african lion is also estimated to be extinct by 2050 due to habitat loss, sport hunting, and loss of their prey base to the bushmeat trade. these beautiful creatures could be extinct in our lifetime. the next generation may not ever have the chance to see these creatures, there will be no more cute lion vines, there will be no more documentaries, there will be no more zoos or sanctuaries containing lions. there will be no more lions.
if you have any love for nature, any love for animals, any love for life, and if you care at all about the permanent loss of a species, especially one so beautiful and iconic, if you care and if you are able, please donate to help save lions.
Not relevant to my blog, but my inner nature lover is calling
instead of assuring everyone that it “isn’t a phase”, why don’t we just assure everyone that if it is a phase it’s fine? it’s healthy to figure yourself out? because if we tell everyone it’s not a phase and it ends up being a phase, those people are going to feel guilty, like they stole resources or wasted time. It’s not bad to ‘go through a phase’. It’s a healthy way of finding out who you are. And if it isn’t a phase, that’s fine too. But if it is, there’s no reason to feel bad.
THIS THIS THIS THIS^^^^^^
This is a wonderful point. How about instead of saying “it isn’t a phase” or “it’s a phase” we all agree that is someone tells you they might be gay/bi/trans/pan/queer, you say “great” and leave it to them to figure out their identity without your input. Because no one knows exactly who another person is. Especially if they don’t.
Trump says he misses life before he became US president – BBC News
Honestly.
What the fucking hell.
“This is more work than in my previous life,” he said. “I thought it would be easier.”
Fuck all Republicans, fuck all those fucking misogynistic assholes who gave the most important job in the world to an asshole so inexperienced he didn’t even realize that being the president would be hard because at least he wasn’t a woman. Fuck you all.
I hate this planet so much….
We ALL miss his previous life
AMEN

shout out to those people for whom mother’s day is not traumatic or sad but just kinda mildly uncomfortable
shout out for those people whose moms aren’t “toxic” or anything of the sort but just don’t conform to the loving, affectionate, encouraging, supportive mom-type that is so vehemently advertised on mother’s day
shout out to those people who can’t make the kinds of gestures that abound on mother’s day without feeling fake and deceitful, but who at the same time don’t want to ignore the whole thing either
shout out to people who remain mildly uncomfortable and feel inadequate because they can’t do like everyone else, posting about their wonderful amazing moms without whom they would be a mess and who is their best friend that they tell everything to
shout out to people who are uncomfortable posting lovey-dovey mom-appreciation messages because they aren’t true, but they can’t be claiming any of the harmful, negative aspects of mother’s day either
shout out to those people with mediocre moms, cause they do exist, and people who only have “thanks for giving me life and raising me but thats pretty much as far as it goes” to say on mother’s day
So Wanda is part of Hydra in the comics now and really…….I wish I could ask where some of the ppl who were outraged at Steve being Hydra are gonna be but then I remember u guys were the same ones back in 2014 telling me and other Jewish/Romani ppl Hydra aren’t Nazis in the movies and to get over Wanda and Pietro being part of them.
OMG there are more errors in this one piece that I published YEARS ago than I have ever corrected in anything of mine. I am used to finding a stray missing comma or something but this is so embarrassing!
I’ve been seeing some posts that are basically “fuck Bill Nye he only has a Bachelor’s degree and isn’t a REAL scientist” and like… guys. That’s not what being a science communicator is about. I’m not just talking about Nye here.
Science communication is a whole field of its own. You can be the most brilliant, qualified research scientist on the planet and have no teaching skills whatsoever. The ability to synthesize complex information and then explain it in simple, accessible language is not easy, and the more you know about a subject, the more difficult it is. Making scientific concepts available to the general public is really important work – work that active researchers are rarely able to undertake.
Say what you will about individuals, but please don’t dismiss the entire field of science communication and start parroting conservatives with the “um you should have a Ph.D before you should be allowed to talk about science”. Accuracy is key, obviously, but don’t throw educators under the bus, jfc.
also, a PhD is hyper specialized, almost to the point of not being able to talk to normal people about your work anymore. for example, I have a PhD and consider myself an expert on the N400 component of the human ERP waveform, specifically with respect to visual words. like … does anyone think that would help me explain … anything he talks about? it’s technically under the umbrella of neuroscience, but it’s so narrow that I actually only need to know the bare minimum about neurons. lol.
so, if he had a PhD, it would not really qualify him to talk about anything with more authority except a very, very narrow band of topics – and everything else would still be at about the level of the bachelors. thus, he would essentially have the same qualifications he has now for most everything he talks about.
weirdly, there is research from med schools that having heart specialists and lung specialists (for example) teach *each other’s specialties* is better for student outcomes. you know that annoying teacher who just would not give a straight answer? about anything? that’s what happens when you know too much and lose perspective on the Main Points.
Look everyone knows Nye is good at his job. Let’s be real – the only reason people are accusing him of being unqualified now is because he acknowledged that gender and sexuality are spectrums and transphobes want to use any flimsy excuse to discredit him.

Congratulations, you made it halfway to Halloween!
Halfoween is the day when next Halloween appears on the horizon before us and the last one disappears behind. Bake some cookies tonight and start planning, because from now on, it’s getting closer each day!Gettin closer!
Betsy DeVos is cutting Obama’s student loan protections. She also owns a student loan debt collection agency. This is why conservatism is a sham: small, starved government sounds fiscally responsible until you realize that the people doing the gutting are simply looking for the government’s market share.

It used to be couched in philosphy and vague economics… now it’s just so blatant, even unapologetic about it. You only have to ‘follow the money’ one step most of the time, maybe two. It’s maddening.

When they talk about “small government,” they don’t actually mean “small government.” They mean “a government that serves their interests and only their interests.”
